Kochi: Two youngsters were killed and two others severely injured in a road accident near Changambuzha Park in Kochi early on Saturday. The car they were travelling in lost control, hit the median, and crashed into a Kochi Metro pillar.
The deceased have been identified as Haroon (20) of Vellakinar and Muneer (20) of Thathampally in Alappuzha. The injured persons are Yakub (20) and Adhil (20), both from Valiyamaram in Alappuzha. They were rushed to a private hospital in the city and are undergoing treatment. Yakub was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
According to police, the accident occurred at 3:30 am when their Maruti Swift car, travelling from north to south on Mamangalam Road, rammed the road median before colliding head-on with Metro Pillar No. 450.
Preliminary investigation by the Elamakkara police suggests that the car was being driven at excessive speed. “Prima facie, it appears that the vehicle was speeding. Whether the driver has dozed off is unclear. We are examining nearby CCTV footage to confirm the sequence of events,” said a police official.
The crash completely wrecked the left side of the car, with one alloy wheel torn apart. Rescuers struggled to pull the victims from the vehicle.
A case has been registered under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence). Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether mechanical failure or road conditions played a role.
