A Vietnam War veteran was killed moments after leaving his granddaughter’s school on Long Island when a stolen car slammed into his parked vehicle, according to reports and a police announcement on Saturday, Nov. 8.
The collision happened when Peter Morris, 80, of South Farmingdale, was getting into a 2012 Hyundai parked in front of 95 Woodward Parkway, and a stolen 2013 Nissan driven by a 24-year-old man struck the Hyundai on Friday, Nov. 7, at 11:41 a.m., detectives said.
The Nissan’s driver ran from the scene, but officers soon found Randy Colon, 24, of Hicksville, nearby and arrested him without incident, according to police.
Morris suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Colon is charged with Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree, Grand Larceny 4th Degree, and Leaving the Scene of an Incident Resulting in Death, according to police. He is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead, on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Peter Morris, a Vietnam War veteran, had just left Woodward Parkway Elementary School, family members told News 12. The impact sent his car careening onto the school’s property. Earlier that morning, Morris had proudly posed for photos with his 9-year-old granddaughter during the school’s event honoring veterans.
Morris’ death comes just five months after his wife died, the family told the outlet. The family had been planning a trip to Disney World — a vacation Morris had been looking forward to sharing with his children and grandchildren.
Peter Morris's family is invited to share details about his life, funeral, any fundraisers, and photos with Daily Voice by emailing jpikora@dailyvoice.com.
