What a horror for home hero Gabriel Bortoleto!
Gabriel Bortoleto’s horrific São Paulo Grand Prix continued with a first-lap retirement in front of his home fans.
Bortoleto was involved in a frightening 57g crash in Saturday’s sprint, and although he walked away unharmed, the damage to his Sauber meant he was unable to take part in qualifying.
Starting from 18th and last on the grid – with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Haas’ Esteban Ocon in the pit lane – Bortoleto was then involved in a collision with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll midway through the opening lap that sent him into a barrier.
The incident saw him lose his front wing, as well as break the steering arm on his car, leading to him being unable to continue and sparking a safety car.
As for Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, after a Turn 1 bump with Williams’ Carlos Sainz that dropped him to 18th after starting 13th, he then collided with the Alpine of Franco Colapinto on the run up the hill onto the start-finish straight.
That forced Hamilton into a pit stop at the end of the second lap to replace the damaged front wing.
