HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A new law aims to help Oahu’s older veterans by saving them some money.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi held a press conference Monday, where he signed Bill 62 into law, which provides military veterans ages 65 and older an exemption from the city’s motor vehicle registration fee for one vehicle.
“As I understand it, we have some 13,000 veterans age 65 or older on the island Oahu; more than seven percent of them are living under the poverty level,” Blangiardi said. “Therefore, the spirit of this to make a difference.”
The bill signing was held at the Oahu Veterans Center.
Representatives from Oahu’s military veterans community also went to the event.
Other city officials attended and spoke at the signing, including Councilmembers Augie Tulba and Andria Tupola, and the director of the City’s Department of Customer Services, Kim Hashiro.
“What the mayor has signed into law today waives the country registration fee, which is $20,” Hashiro said. “There is still a state fee, registration fee, and some other small fees that would need to be assessed.”
The law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2026.
