PERINTON, N.Y. — Five people were taken into custody after deputies say they broke into more than 100 cars early Thursday morning in the area of Fairport, Perinton, and Penfield.
Many of the break-ins occurred at Fairport Apartments on Whitney Road East in Perinton. I counted at least two dozen cars broken into at that location.
Deputies initially responded to reports of larcenies around 4 a.m. Deputies say they ended up in a chase with a car they believed was involved, which crashed near Green Ridge Road and Green Valley Road in Perinton.
Deputies say one of the items stolen was a loaded handgun. They say they recovered it after one of the suspects discarded it in a nearby wooded area.
Deputies did not specify what other items were stolen. However, several victims say only loose change was taken.
Linda Sahs-Laird, a resident, says her registration and insurance card were stolen.
“I mean, these are seniors that live here. I have a walker and I have surgery on December first, and I have to go to the store and get everything I need. But now I have to deal with the insurance companies and the police reports. It’s very inconvenient, it made me cry,” said Sahs-Laird.
Deputy Dave Marcucci advised residents to remove valuables from their cars as a preventative measure to keep them from getting stolen.
Deputies believe they have all the suspects in custody and said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
