The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) is urging the faithful to “keep vigil and pray” after a car bomb killed eight people and injured others in New Delhi Nov. 10, according to Agenzia Fides.
The bishops expressed “deep sorrow at the deaths of innocent people and for the injured,” saying they are praying for the recovery of the injured and for “all those who are experiencing immense pain at this time,” according to Fides.
Police have launched a terrorism investigation and arrested several suspects in connection with the bombing, according to the outlet.
The bishops urged national unity in efforts against terrorism and advised citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities. The bishops also requested parish priests notify authorities “about any suspicious activity or abandoned objects in or near church premises.”
“Let us remain united as one community; let us maintain peace and work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens,” they said. “Let us continue to pray for peace and security in our beloved nation.”
The detonation occurred near the 17th-century Red Fort monument, a major tourist attraction.
According to ABC News, if the blast is confirmed as a deliberate attack, it will mark the deadliest explosion in New Delhi since 2011.
The outlet also reports that before the blast occurred on Nov. 10, police in Kashmir “dismantled a suspected militant cell operating from the disputed region to the outskirts of New Delhi.” According to the Economic Times, the network was operating across multiple states, including Kashmir. Police arrested eight people and seized 2,900 kg of explosives.
On Nov. 11, a suicide bomber killed 12 people and wounded 27 others outside a court in Islamabad, Pakistan, according to the Associated Press.
“The succession of these two incidents has increased political tension between India and Pakistan,” Fides reported, “with both sides accusing each other of involvement or complicity in the attacks.”
