GATES, N.Y. — Gates Police say a larceny suspect was hit by a car and killed on I-390 south after trying to escape from police Thursday afternoon.
At around 12:05 p.m. police responded to the Aldi on Spencerport Road for a report of a larceny. Gates Police Chief Robert Long says they don’t know exactly how much the suspect, a 33-year-old man, stole from the store, but that they stole various meat products.
About five minutes later, police say they saw the suspect on Lyell Avenue at the 390 bridge. They say the suspect then ran down the side of the bridge onto 390, crossing multiple traffic lanes.
The suspect was hit by a car heading south on 390, police say. An officer crossed 390 immediately to start life saving measures, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Long, the driver of the car, a 69-year-old, went to the hospital for injuries for treatment and has since been released. Long says the officer is doing okay, but just in shock.
Police have not identified the suspect, as they say they are waiting to notify the family. Long says the suspect was known to the Gates Police Department.
State Police and the State Attorney Generals Office are investigating the crash, since the suspect died during a police-related matter. Check back later for updates as News10NBC learns more.
