So, we have some very interesting legal-related car news.
And it comes to us from the state of Wisconsin.
Wisconsin lawmakers have proposed some very interesting new legislation.
The bill in question would apply to repeat, reckless speeding drivers.
Those repeat offenders would be required to install speed limiter technology in their cars.
This technology would prevent drivers from exceeding 20mph over a given speed limit.
Oh, and it’s expensive, too – costing over $1,700 annually in maintenance.
So, what does the state of Wisconsin consider to be a ‘reckless’ or repeat offender?
According to Milwaukee, those with two or more reckless driving violations in the past five years would qualify for the device and must use it for at least one year.
And those who refuse to install it could face further punishment as well.
Failing to install or removing speed assistance devices could result in a maximum fine of $600 and up to six months in jail.
According to LendingTree, Wisconsin had the fifth-highest rate of speeding drivers in the US in 2024.
Okay, so Wisconsin has a legitimate problem, and it now appears to have a solution.
But how has the proposed new bill been received?
Those in support of the law believe that the technology is a way to remove reckless driving from the road without an immediate jail sentence.
In turn, the state of Wisconsin hopes to lower crash, injury, and fatality rates across the state.
The targeted nature of the bill has led supporters to argue that it is a proper response to drivers who are a danger to others.
Those against the US bill believe that it goes too far.
Some are concerned that it could have an unfair impact on low-income drivers.
There are also worries that the law could lead to a surveillance-like state.
Whether this law gets passed or not very much remains to be seen.
But it is certainly an active attempt to make Wisconsin’s roads safer.
