Tata Sierra is one of the most loved SUVs from the 1990s. The original or “OG” Sierra was known for its rugged build and dependable diesel engine. Now, after more than two decades, the Tata Sierra 2025 is making a comeback with new petrol and diesel engines, modern technology, and a more refined driving experience. Here’s a clear comparison of how the engines have evolved from the old Sierra to the New Sierra.

The OG Tata Sierra was launched in 1991 and became popular for its strong, utilitarian design. It came only with diesel engines. The first version used a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated diesel engine that produced 63 hp. Later, Tata introduced a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that delivered 91 hp. Both engines used a four-cylinder layout and were paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. These engines were not very powerful by today’s standards, but they were reliable, torquey, and suitable for the driving conditions of that time.

The New Sierra, officially scheduled to launch on November 25, 2025, marks a major shift in Tata’s SUV lineup. Unlike the original, the new model will offer both petrol and diesel engines. This is a big upgrade for the Tata Sierra ICE version, as customers now get a wider range of powertrain options.
The petrol lineup is completely new and includes a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine for smoother everyday driving, along with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for those who prefer stronger performance. These Tata Sierra new petrol engines are expected to offer better refinement and fuel efficiency than the older diesel-only setup of the OG Sierra.
The 2025 Sierra will also continue the diesel legacy, but in a far more advanced form. The expected options include a 1.5-litre diesel engine delivering around 118 hp and 260 Nm of torque, which balances power and mileage well. For customers who want more strength, Tata is expected to offer the 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine that produces 170 hp and 350 Nm. Both engines are likely to be offered with manual as well as automatic transmissions (something the old Sierra never had).
The biggest difference between the two SUVs is the range of engine options. The OG Sierra offered only diesel engines with power between 63 hp and 91 hp. The New Sierra offers a mix of petrol and diesel engines with power figures going up to nearly 170 hp. This makes the 2025 model much more powerful, refined, and suitable for modern highway and city driving. The old engine technology was simple and mechanical, while the new engines use advanced turbocharging, better emissions control, and smoother gearboxes.
The expected Tata Sierra price will fall in the Rs 15 lakh to Rs 22 lakh range (ex-showroom). This places the SUV among strong competitors. The Tata Sierra 2025 rivals include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, MG Hector, and even some lower variants of the Mahindra XUV700. With its modern design and multiple engine choices, the 2025 Sierra aims to stand out in the mid-size SUV segment.
