A person has died following a serious three-car crash on the M66. Emergency services were called to the scene, close to the M60 junction at Simister Island yesterday evening, Sunday November 16.
The motorway was fully closed off as police and paramedics responded. It's understood a person has died in the collision and they are believed to be a pedestrian.
Greater Manchester Police are set to release more information later today, reports the Manchester Evening News.
A stretch of the motorway was closed off both ways after the incident as accident investigation work was carried out throughout the night.
The M66 southbound remained closed at Simister Island this morning, with traffic being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads.
Greater Manchester Police warned of "delays in excess of 45 minutes on approach to Simister."
National Highways North West reported there were around six miles of congestion.
Heavy traffic was also reported on the M62 westbound between junctions 20 and 26.
According to National Highways, the M66 fully reopened around 11am this morning.
