Drivers are stuck in delays in a town centre this evening after a car fire.
Two fire engines are at the scene in Staceys Street in Maidstone.
Police have also confirmed the attendance of patrols and their assistance with a road closure.
At around 4.45pm, a passer-by said: “The road is shut by the roundabout going up Staceys Street.
“There are two fire engines and a police car. It looks like a Land Rover has burnt out”.
Photos taken from a distance show huge plumes of smoke in the air at the scene.
As of 5.24pm, Kent County Council’s Traffic Operations Centre says the eastbound carriageway remains closed.
The section of Stacey Street that runs from the roundabout, at the junction with Sandling Road uphill to the junction with Lower Boxley Road, remains closed while the vehicle is recovered.
A local diversion is in place and motorists have been told to expect delays in the surrounding area this evening.
The fire service have been approached for more information.
