A 78-year-old driver has been ticketed after the car he was driving was struck by a train as he attempted to complete a U-turn near train tracks in Upstate New York.
Most drivers are well aware that there are certain locations on a road where you need to exercise extreme caution, including intersections, crosswalks, and roundabouts. There are also specific areas where drivers should never attempt to complete an illegal U-turn, including anywhere near a railroad crossing.
According to a post on the Albany County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Facebook page, that's exactly what happened over the weekend at a railroad crossing in Voorheesville, NY, that led to a train crushing a car for almost a full mile.
It all started just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 15th, 2025, when the Sheriff's Office was called to respond to a car versus train incident near Voorheesville Avenue in Albany County, NY.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a 78-year-old Catskill, NY man attempted to execute an illegal U-turn near the train tracks. Unfortunately, the driver was unable to complete the U-turn, and the car became stuck on the train tracks, according to WTEN.
The car was subsequently struck by a southbound CSX train and was dragged down the tracks for approximately three-quarters of a mile. Thankfully, the driver was able to get out of the car "unscathed" before the collision, said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple Sr.
Following the crash, Sheriff Apple said, "We urge everyone to exercise caution. This traumatic event affects not only those involved but also our personnel."
The driver, who wasn't identified by name, was issued several traffic tickets following the crash and is due to appear at New Scotland Town Court at a later date.
