The latest battery-powered Porsche has just been confirmed, and it has a very clever trick up its sleeve that petrol cars will never beat. Just like a modern smartphone, the all-new Cayenne Electric range now features wireless refilling. Simply park over a special charging plate, and the car takes care of the rest, with the battery getting topped up without requiring any annoying cables.Of course, to take advantage of this smart battery boosting, owners will need to install an inductive charging system on their drive, which won’t be cheap. It’s also slower (around 11Kw) than rapid refilling via a wired connection (now over 300Kw), but it certainly takes all the hassle out of topping up the tank.
When needing a faster charge, the new Cayenne is fully capable of achieving a range of 202 miles from a 16-minute stop at the service station. That means a quick cuppa on the motorway will get enough juice back in the tank for a trip from London to Manchester. It can also travel for almost 400 miles on a single full charge.
That impressive range hs been made possible thanks to the newly developed 113 kWh high-voltage battery, which benefits from double-sided cooling for optimum thermal management. The car’s design has also been modified to reduce drag and improve the overall efficiency.The car gets the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) system, which precisely adapts the aerodynamic properties to the respective driving situation and speed. The active aerodynamic elements include movable cooling air flaps in the nose, an adaptive roof spoiler and the innovative, active aeroblades at the rear of the Turbo.
They extend the lateral tear-off edges and improve the flow characteristics, which leads to an increase in range, especially at higher speeds. Other aerodynamic measures from the Porsche design team include air curtains in the front bodywork, an almost completely enclosed underbody, special aero wheels and a diffuser at the rear.It’s not just on the outside where things are impressive. The tech continues inside with two huge 14-inch displays that keep the driver informed and passengers entertained. Porsche is also offering a smart head-up display with AR technology, which transforms the windscreen into a giant 87-inch screen.
Mood Modes have been added, which transform the interior into an experience space that adapts to the mood and situation with the seating position, lighting, air conditioning, sound profile, and display appearance switching automatically to match emotions.
There’s also smart ambient lighting, which includes a communication light – an animated light strip that welcomes passengers as they enter the car and visualises various vehicle states, such as the charging process.
Another nice boost is the introduction of artificial intelligence, which Porsche boasts will understand complex, interrelated queries and recognises context. The car firm reckons it will even respond like a real conversation partner.
Finally, with the Porsche Digital Key, the smartphone and smartwatch become vehicle keys that can be shared digitally with up to seven other users.
