Garrett Kennedy, the Chief of Police for the City of Alhambra, identified the officer as 28-year-old Alec Sanders during a press conference Thursday morning.
He is survived by his parents, two younger sisters and a brother.
Kennedy described Sanders as the type of officer that responded to every call. He showed up to work last night to cover a shift for someone else.
The officer worked for the Long Beach Police Department for about a year and had been with the Alhambra Police Department for about eight months.
His swearing in ceremony was held just a couple of weeks ago.
Three people were in the second vehicle involved in the crash. One person, a female, was killed, another had serious injuries and the third person had non-life threatening injuries.
Details on the person who died were not immediately available.
The crash was reported just after 3 a.m. on Valley Boulevard near Raymond and Fremont avenues.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area due to street closures.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, according to the Alhambra Police Department.
