A police investigation has been launched after a cyclist died after being involved in a collision with a car in Gateshead. Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the fatal crash.
Police say that shortly after 9.10pm on Thursday, a man was riding an electrical bike eastbound on the path alongside the Felling Bypass westbound carriageway. For reasons yet to be established, the man, who was in his 50s, fell off the bicycle close to the junction with Hepburn Gardens.
The man fell into the carriageway before being struck by a Renault Captur car, leaving him with serious injuries. Emergency services attended the scene but despite the efforts of paramedics the man was later pronounced dead.
His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers. The driver of the Captur stayed at the scene to assist officers.
A section of the road was closed to allow for officers to carry out enquiries before later being re-opened. Police are today asking for any witnesses to the collision to contact them.
Sergeant Craig Bartle, of Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly lost his life in this tragic incident. We will support them in any way that we can as they attempt to process this devastating news.
“An investigation into the collision has been launched and we would ask that anyone with information which may assist us in our enquiries to get in touch. We’re particularly keen to hear from those with dash cam footage of the moments leading up to the collision. If you do have details which could help then please contact us so we can get a complete picture of exactly what happened last night.”
Witnesses or anyone with information should send Northumbria Police a DM on social media or use the live chat and report forms on the force’s website. For those unable to make contact via those ways, call 101. Quote reference number: NP-20251120-1104.
