It was a topsy-turvy start to the day for one driver when his car ended up on its roof on a busy Bristol street.
Police were called after the black Toyota hit a "notorious" pedestrian island, at a zebra crossing, outside a row of shops in Henleaze Road.
The motorist, described by witnesses as a man aged in his 30s or 40s, was said to be unharmed, and able to make calls from the side of the road following the crash, at about 6.30am today (November 22).
The car, however, was severely damaged, with its contents spilled over the carriageway.
Dramatic pictures sent to BristolLive by a member of the public show the aftermath of the collision.
Witnesses said a paramedic, on his way to work, stopped to assist and “took control of the situation” before police arrived.
Officers closed the road briefly while a low-loader lorry removed the damaged vehicle.
The road was reopened again, and the vehicle was removed by 9am.
Witnesses told BristolLive cars had hit the pedestrian island, a bollard on a concrete plinth, several times before – but with less dramatic consequences.
Finley Charlotte, who was on her way to work when the crash happened, said: “It was a bad accident. I heard a bang and turned the corner and saw it mid-flip.
“I was worried about the guy inside but he was fine, a bit disoriented. He was lucky.
“A paramedic on his way to work saw the accident and pulled over and took control.”
Finley said cars had hit the island before and added: “It happens more often than you think, quite a few times. People have told me ‘it wasn’t the first, and won’t be the last’.”
Another woman who works nearby said there had been collisions between cars and the island before.
She said: “There have been a lot of accidents, but that was one of the worst. The bollard is notorious. It’s quite raised, a lot (of cars) have hit it.”
