Last December, TikToker Hallie (@halliewitte2) had her car stolen from the Mall of America, and it almost got shipped out of the country.
Her car was brand-new because she had just bought it in November. She and her friends decided to go to the mall over winter break. They shopped for a couple of hours and then headed out to where she had parked.
However, her car was not there. At first, they thought they had just misremembered where the car was parked, so they walked around the parking ramp for an hour, looking for her car. Finally, they went back inside the mall and alerted mall security.
“It was so frustrating because they were just like, you misplaced it,” said Hallie.
“Everyone was telling me I misplaced it. But then, finally, the cops come, and they were like, walk us to where you parked. Glass was everywhere.”
The police found the footage of a guy driving off in her car. Hallie filed a police report, but her car was most likely lost forever because she had temporary license plates on, so it couldn’t be tracked. There was almost no hope of her getting the car back.
A week later, she received a call from the police, informing her that they had caught a guy stealing a BMW out of the Mall of America.
They ended up uncovering a car theft ring involving 15 guys. They arrested the men and discovered that they had Hallie’s car.
“It was on a trailer about to get sold somewhere in the Middle East, so then we finally get to go pick it up, and this was just crazy,” Hallie said. “It was like, in a junkyard.”

There were Ohio license plates on the car, and the windows were all broken. Her stuff was piled into one section of the car. In the end, she was able to get the vehicle cleaned and fixed up.
Now, it’s back in action. She feels lucky that the police were able to track down this car theft ring and get her car back.
In the comments section, several TikTok users shared stories about how their cars were stolen. Car theft is shockingly common these days.
“Omg, my car was stolen from the MOA in 2017. They found it in Iowa. The mall security was no help,” commented one user.
“My sister-in-law’s car was stolen from her driveway here in the Twin Cities. They also cloned her key fob. It was located 10 days later. She had the car fixed up and sold it because she was so grossed out,” wrote another.
“I got my catalytic converter stolen, and no help from the mall, and the cameras didn’t catch the person. This happened on the north side of the Mall of America,” added a third.
Story time! ? sorry if it’s long hold down for 2x?? #storytime #mallofamerica
