A couple weeks back, we reported on Gordon Murray Automotive and RM Sotheby’s upcoming sale of the sole remaining S1 LM chassis. Well, the hammer has now dropped on chassis #1 during the Las Vegas Grand Prix last weekend, with the final figure reaching a staggering $20,630,000, making it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

In exchange for that dizzying amount of cash, the new owner receives the first of just five S1 LMs ever built. Designed as a tribute to the Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR that Gordon Murray famously masterminded, each S1 LM is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V12 capable of revving over 12,000 rpm and producing 690 horsepower. However, the final sale price could have easily afforded you an original McLaren F1, and we’re not quite sure which we would choose if we were dropping 20 million dollars on a ride, even if the new owner no doubt has one parked in their collection already.
