HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Two dogs were found abandoned in Bates Wood Park after being dumped from a vehicle, with one dog later dying from injuries and the other requiring extensive medical treatment.
Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates have offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person responsible for this abuse.
A shelter camera at New London Animal Control recorded the dogs being thrown from a car, according to Animal Control Officer Tonya Kloiber.
“He just saw a small white object being thrown from the car,” she said. “Unfortunately there’s nothing definitive on the video to see the car. Our best hope is someone sees these dogs, recognizes them, and does the right thing.”
The dogs, named Eeyore and Piglet, were found matted and in poor health. Both had to be sedated and shaved due to their condition.
Piglet was struck by a car after being abandoned. Kloiber found her during the rescue.
“We were able to get her out from under the car she didn’t appear injured, she was limping a little but nothing crazy,” she continued. “On my way down to the shelter I found the other dog.”
Eeyore did not survive. Piglet faces a lengthy recovery process that includes leg amputation, spaying and treatment for being underweight.
Kloiber said whoever dumped the dogs could face charges.
“Absolutely, it’s absolute cruelty,” she said.
The shelter is seeking donations of small sweaters for Piglet and cash to cover medical expenses. Kloiber said similar cases are becoming more frequent.
“In just a few months we have had five profoundly matted dog cases,” she said.
Piglet will not be ready for adoption for some time as she continues her recovery.
