At least four people were taken to the hospital after a fiery two-car crash in Scripps Ranch on Monday, officials said.
The collision happened around 5:40 p.m. near Spring Canyon Road and Blue Cypress Drive, right in front of the San Diego Fire Department’s Station 37.

Investigators say a white BMW was headed west, and a red Tesla was going east, when the Tesla made a left turn in front of the BMW. The BMW became fully engulfed in flames, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Candace Hadley said.
The proximity of the fire station allowed for a quick response to the scene, and may have made a difference.
“As soon as the collision happened, the fire personnel came out of their station because they heard it, and they rendered assistance to everybody in the vehicles and were able to remove people while the vehicle was burning. So that was a good thing,” San Diego police Sgt. Robert McDonald said.
The Tesla driver had life-threatening injuries, McDonald said. In the BMW, one person’s injuries were described as significant, while the other two had minor injuries.
One person was found lying in the street, but it was not immediately clear if that person was ejected or taken out of the car.
Police closed off some of Spring Canyon Road Monday night. The roadway was reopened overnight.
