Dramatic dashcam video shows New Jersey police pulling an unconscious man from the burning wreckage of his car — thanks to his iPhone raising the alarm and saving his life.
Safwan Islam, 26, plowed his car into a tree after reportedly suffering a medical episode behind the wheel while driving along Route 27 near Franklin Township, NJ, WABC reported.
He was still unconscious when his cell phone pinged 911 thanks to the “Call After Severe Crash” feature, which automatically calls emergency services following a 20-second countdown.
Hero officers Yash Shroff and Thomas Sites were then seen arriving as the car was in flames, yet still breaking the driver’s side window to pull out the driver.
“This is a miracle by every aspect of the word miracle,” South Brunswick police said. “And the officers’ actions are heroic. As you can see in the video, it’s pretty dramatic, how the flames are leaping at their feet as they’re pulling him out.”
“Within seconds, that scene turns… to a fully engulfed care fire. This is a miracle — a Thanksgiving miracle, I call it,” cops added.
The fiery crash took place on Nov. 9, but Islam was able to return home to his family on Tuesday after undergoing surgery to his back and neck.
His grateful father, Naushad, wrote a letter to the two cops who saved his son’s life.
“I couldn’t say anything other than thank you. What else can I say? For them, it’s probably the work they do every day to save everybody’s life. But for me, it’s getting back my son to my family, so I can’t thank them enough,” Naushad told NBC New York.
“He’s doing well, he’s talking. When he was in the hospital, we weren’t sure how he was doing. It was really, really bad,” Naushad said.
“He’s doing much better. I would say that compared to what he went through, it’s nothing but divine intervention,” he added.
The final cause of the crash is still under investigation by police in Franklin Township. Police did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
