Toyota GR GT Teaser Video
The long road to the reveal of Toyota’s new sports car serving as a spiritual successor to icons like the Lexus LFA and Toyota 2000GT is almost here. A television advert that recently aired in Japan has revealed the new name of the car and its release date.
For those who haven’t been following the development, the new sports car is the production version of the Toyota GR GT3 race car concept first shown at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. In the years since the reveal, Toyota has been spotted testing camouflaged prototypes designed for both the road and racetrack.
The television spot, which was uploaded to the YouTube channel Mike Forsythe (via Motor1), confirms the car not as a Toyota – nor Lexus for that matter – but as a standalone model from GR, the Gazoo Racing performance and racing arm that represents both brands. The car’s official title is GR GT, and the reveal date is set for December 5. A formal debut is expected to follow at next month’s 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon.
The name isn’t a huge surprise as Toyota was already discovered to have trademarked it a year ago. Included with the trademark application was a stylized version of “GR GT,” with the GR portion featuring the familiar red and black logo of the GR performance squad. This video makes it official.
The advert showing off the new GR GT is brief and doesn’t give away much information – other than the name GT on the license plate – but it is the first glimpse we have of a production GR GT car. There’s also something to the way this was filmed, with the brand’s halo cars so far making an appearance, and visually highlighting the GR GT taking over the mantle from the LFA, as it did from the 2000 GT. The words, “The Soul Lives On” highlight this.
While the television spot shows the GR GT sans camouflage for the first time, the car is kept in the dark for the most part, but some details can be spotted, like the wide haunches, multiple vents in the hood, and the light signatures at both ends which look to emulate the design Toyota will use on its revised GR010 Hybrid LMH race car set to compete in the 2026 World Endurance Championship.
We just got our first good look at what will likely be the interior of the upcoming sports car from Toyota and Lexus.
Lexus will likely still get its own luxury-oriented version of the car in some markets, to be called the LFR – a name that Toyota has also trademarked. Lexus previewed such a design during 2025 Monterey Car Week with the Lexus Sport Concept – a stunning sports car with proportions and design elements similar to what feature on the GR GT.
Despite its popularity long after it went out of production, the Lexus LFA was a very expensive commercial flop. The LFR will be different.
Toyota has been quiet on just what is nestled under the car’s long hood, but a V8 engine is almost certain. Toyota powertrain chief Takashi Uehara confirmed plans for a new V8 engine during last month’s Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. He hinted that the engine will be based on the new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that Toyota is developing and testing in the GR Yaris mid-engine concept car. In the GR GT, the V8 is expected to be paired with a hybrid system.
Yellow warning stickers seen on prototypes confirm an electrified powertrain is being developed, and those test vehicles were also seen to start up and drive for the first few feet on electric power alone before the internal-combustion engine kicks in. Combined output is likely to be in excess of 600 horsepower. One of the cars Toyota has benchmarked its prototypes against is Mercedes-AMG’s GT, which in hybrid form develops 805 hp. We’ll have all the details soon as the reveal is set for next week, so stay tuned.
