New Delhi: A 29-year-old Karol Bagh resident was arrested after his speeding Mercedes crashed into a roadside pole, killing a 23-year-old man who was standing nearby and injuring his two friends near Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj early on Sunday.
The driver, Shivam, had allegedly lost control due to a diversion and hit a pole on the roadside where the three people, who worked at a restaurant in Ambience Mall, were standing.
Police said that Shivam had borrowed his friend’s Mercedes to attend a wedding.
“He was returning home with his wife and elder brother after attending a wedding. As per preliminary inquiry, the vehicle lost balance due to a diversion, hitting a pole at an auto stand where the three victims were standing,” ,” a police officer said.
A police control room (PCR) received a call at 2.33 am about the accident at Nelson Mandela Marg.
Deputy commissioner of police (Southwest) Amit Goel said that the police found the damaged Mercedes, which was seized.
“There were three injured people aged around 25, 35 and 23. All of them worked at a restaurant in Ambience Mall. They were taken to a hospital where one of them, Rohit Singh, died during treatment. The other two injured persons are undergoing treatment,” Goel said.
Singh was a resident of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli. DCP Goel added that the driver has been apprehended and necessary legal action is being taken against him.
No First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged yet. Police said they are questioning the accused and trying to get statements from the other two injured.
