NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A two-car head-on crash in Mt. Juliet this afternoon put Vanderbilt University Medical Center on a mass casualty alert.
The crash occurred just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Central Pike near John Wright Road. This is near Springdale Elementary School.
According to the Mt. Juliet Police Department, they were notified of a stolen vehicle. The suspected stolen vehicle drove by a patrol unit stationed at the elementary school at a high rate of speed.
A Metro Nashville Police Department officer was attempting to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle as it entered Mt. Juliet, but did not pursue after it took off at high speeds, said Mt. Juliet police.
An MJPD officer, who attempted to pursue the vehicle, came upon the car, which had already crashed and caught on fire, police said.
Two occupants of the stolen vehicle, a male and a female, went to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, said police. Eight others in the other vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"We’re grateful for our officers, all first responders, and the bystanders who stepped up to help," said Chief Chandler on social media. "Our prayers are with everyone impacted by this tragic incident. It’s heartbreaking that a suspect’s reckless choice put so many in harm’s way."
The roadway remained closed for hours as police investigated.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
