Mercedes-Benz confirmed earlier this year that the G-class lineup would expand to include a new cabriolet model.
The initial confirmation showed the model shrouded in darkness, and now we have our first look at a camouflaged version testing in Austria.
The exact timeline for the G-class Cabriolet's arrival is still secret, but we don't expect it before spring, as Mercedes still wants to winter test the model.
Mercedes announced back in September that it plans to expand the G-class lineup to include a new cabriolet model. While that sort of announcement would normally be followed by "unfortunately, it won't be coming to the United States," that wasn't the case with the new cabriolet. Now, Mercedes has released the first official images of the droptop SUV, which show a camouflaged model testing in Austria.
The camouflage doesn't do much to hide the fact that the body is pure G-class—meaning it's as boxy and muscular as ever. The soft top doesn't appear to be a full Landaulet setup like it was back in 2018, but instead it looks to slide back from just above the dashboard. Similar to the 2018 version, though, the new cabriolet's bodywork cuts off behind the rear seats, giving the off-road-ready SUV more of an "L" shape than the G's traditional cube-like proportions.
Mercedes hasn't provided a clear timeline for when to expect the new G-class cabriolet to show up, beyond saying that it will announce more details "in due time." We wouldn't be shocked if it arrives as a 2026 model, but we don't expect to see it anytime before next spring, as the company confirmed plans to put the SUV through winter testing in Sweden this year.

The European planemaker said Monday that it "identified a supplier quality issue affecting a limited number” of metal panels on the single-aisle A320 aircraft. "The source of the issue has been identified, contained and all newly produced panels conform to all requirements," Airbus said in a brief statement.
