A three-year-old died Sunday, Dec. 7, after being struck by a car in Sandwich and taken to a nearby hospital, according to the office of Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois and Sandwich Police Chief Jason Keene.
After receiving a 911 call, rescuers went at 3:30 p.m. to the area of Service Road in East Sandwich, between Quaker Meetinghouse Road and Chase Road, on a report of a pedestrian struck by a car. Rescuers found the child who was injured and they took the child to the hospital.
Service Road is a two-lane street that runs parallel to Route 6 in Sandwich.
The driver remained at the scene Sunday and was cooperating with the investigation, according to the statement from Galibois’ office.
“The thoughts of our agencies are with the child’s family and loved ones during this unimaginable time,” the statement read.
Investigators did not release further information Sunday due to the ongoing investigation and “the sensitive nature of the incident,” according to the statement.
