NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – We’re learning new details about the moment a woman in a wheelchair was hit by a vehicle on Thursday night in Nashville.
Witnesses in the area tell WSMV that the woman was on the side of Nolensville Pike when she was hit by a vehicle and the driver kept going, leaving her on the road.
WMSV obtained surveillance video capturing the driver hitting the woman as she was sitting in her wheelchair.
“I saw a lot of ambulance and police cars about everyone in the city probably,” said Rachel, who lives in the area.
Medics arrived around 8 p.m., blocking off the intersection of Thompson Lane and Nolensville Pike.
“As I started getting closer, my friend walked up and said it was the Vanessa girl in the wheelchair,” said Rachel.
The woman was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is expected to survive.

Derrick Fitzgerald, who works in the area says the woman is often on the corner with a cardboard sign asking for money and help.
“It’s sad, she’s here a lot. It’s scary because it’s supposed to be safe and drivers they have no remorse. They speed like they’re in a rush. They don’t care about nobody,” said Fitzgerald.
Rachel says she’ll be taking extra precautions when walking in the area going forward.
“I’m always scared when faced with vehicles on the road you know. We’re glad you’re okay Vanessa. I live on the street and it’s hard out here you know,” Rachel said.
Police say the driver did eventually return to the scene and is being interviewed by police. So far, no charges haven’t been filed.
