Ford’s Coyote engine is an absolute gem. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Chevy or Mopar fan, you have to hand it to these killer mills. They sound great, they rev high, and deliver an ultra-healthy power band that’s perfect for virtually any driving style. Ford just took things up a notch for restomod builders, too. It just released an all-new crate engine package that has most everything you need to slam the Coyote 5.0 into any muscle car your heart desires, instantly taking it to near-Dark Horse standards.
The restomod game is all about bringing classic cars to the modern age with more advanced equipment than they left the factory with. There’s no faster way to do that than to slam a modern engine and transmission under the hood. If you’ve got a thing for the Blue Oval, this latest crate engine combo from Ford Performance is the way to go.
530 horsepower and eight forward gears puts any build on the fast track to modern performance.
The new kit can be found under the part number M-9000-PMCM4. It’s a complete setup that includes a 5.0-liter Coyote and a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, along with an engine management system and more essentials. While builders do need to sort out an exhaust, fuel system, and mounts, it’s an absolutely awesome combo that puts restomod projects on the fast track to completion.
The centerpiece of this kit is the 5.0-liter Coyote V8. It’s rated to produce a commanding 480 horsepower at 7,150 RPM and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 RPM, which is just shy of the Dark Horse’s output. The motor does have a 12:1 compression ratio, but will run on premium pump gas, making it an excellent choice for street-driven muscle cars. The bundle includes your engine management system, complete with an engine controller and wiring harness. Ford’s also tossing in a Boss 302 alternator kit.
These engines were used for everything from trucks to muscle cars. They’re dirt-cheap, powerful, and there are millions out there.
Behind the 5.0 is a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. If you’re working with a classic car, this double-overdrive gearbox is really what’s going to integrate it into modern traffic. Long overdrive gears coupled with a 2.66:1 first gear ratio will also keep your options open for differential gear selection, making it easier for you to build your machine just the way you like. Of course, everything needed to set the transmission onto the engine is part of the deal, including the clutch, flywheel, and bellhousing. You will likely need to modify your transmission tunnel to make this work in classic muscle cars, but this is a great starting point.
As for the damage done, Ford is selling this kit at a retail price of $22,550. Overall, that’s a very competitive cost that’s pretty much in line with similar LS and Gen-III Hemi packages. More than bundling killer horsepower, fuel injection, and overdrive into one part number, Ford’s also backing this setup with a 24-month/24,000-mile warranty. Overall, it’s a heavy-hitter Ford nuts need to consider for their next build.
