A cyclist who was hit by a car in North Tyneside has been taken to hospital, police have confirmed. A huge police cordon has been in place on Monkseaton Front Street between The Ship Inn/Spar and Pykerley Road since shortly before 9am on Friday.
Collision investigation teams remain on the scene, while residents and local businesses have told ChronicleLive of their shock in seeing such a huge police presence in the area. The cyclist, a woman in her 30s, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Her injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Just before 9am today (Friday), we received a report via the ambulance service of a collision on Front Street in the Monkseaton area of North Tyneside. It was reported that a vehicle had struck a woman riding a bicycle.
"Emergency services attended and the woman – who is in her 30s – was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. She remains in hospital for treatment.
"The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries. A section of the road remains closed to traffic."
Residents of Monkseaton have reacted with shock after the collision on Friday morning. The incident occurred less than half an hour before several of the area's local independent businesses opened up.
Jane Bradshaw hairdresser at A Cut Above, told ChronicleLive: "I have never seen as many blue flashing lights as I had this morning. There was a lady knocked down by Monkseaton Library last year and it wasn't like this. I hope they're okay."
Brenda Johnstone, who works at Shades, said: "I came into Front Street this morning and it was all cordoned off. It's a bit of a shock because there's stuff all over the place this morning."
The police cordon was established between Tracey Sturrock chiropody and Monkseaton Computers – the latter of which customers have not been able to enter. Patsy Jackson, who works at the chiropodists, said: "I'm quite lucky because I thought they wouldn't let me cross.
"I drove along and the road was closed, I had to go all the way around past the ice rink. I didn't see what had happened but I hope they're okay."
Local residents have been forced to take alternate routes around Front Street so as not to disturb the cordon. One of those is Rosalind Ash, who was walking her dog Ollie.
She said: "I heard all the sirens and everything. My granddaughter goes to Whitley Bay High so I was panicking because she walks to school."
Rosalind added: "That crossing down there (by Monkseaton Carpets and Amaze Gourmet Spice) is horrendous.
"The drivers go through even when it's on red, and you've got to look both ways even when it's on red for cars. It's dark in the mornings as well, it doesn't help see, does it?"
