The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report over the weekend from a driver named Lovey King, whose wheels were stolen from a parked vehicle along Interstate 40 near Aviation Parkway.
King said she left her car after an alternator issue.
When she came back 36 hours later, the wheels were gone.
“I would have thought that I’d had enough time to make the decision I needed to make without the car being in danger,” she said.
WRAL News observed at least four vehicles in the area missing their tires along I-40.
“I thought there was a possibility that it could get clipped in an accident, or a tractor-trailer or something, or someone not paying attention driving, possibly striking it. But it never would have occurred to me that the tires would be in jeopardy,” she said.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office urged residents to only park on the side of the highway when necessary and to avoid leaving vehicles unattended for extended periods of time.
Drivers are also encouraged to consider using wheel locks, which can serve as a deterrent against theft.
Anyone who notices suspicious activity is asked to report it immediately. Authorities also encourage anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.
