San Francisco Fire Department crews rushed to 1351 California Street between Leavenworth and Hyde streets after a cable car on the California Street Line came to a sudden stop Monday afternoon. Officials evaluated 15 patients on scene, transporting 13 to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor aches to moderate trauma. Two individuals suffered more serious traumatic injuries while the rest reported pain from the jolt. No life-threatening conditions were reported.
Aerial video captured first responders in reflective vests inspecting under the car alongside a shattered windshield. Fire officials indicated an object may have been thrown at the cable car, prompting the emergency stop. The Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) scene was secured quickly with no further fire personnel needed. California Street remains closed between Hyde and Leavenworth during the ongoing probe.

SFPD and Muni investigators took over after fire crews stabilized patients and cleared the area. The department urged avoiding the Nob Hill neighborhood as ambulances ferried injured passengers. SFFD Captain Jonathan Howald noted the rapid response prevented escalation. All 14 injuries fell into minor-to-moderate categories with no fatalities. Two patients declined hospital transport after on-site evaluation.
The California Street Cable Car Line, a historic SF icon since 1878, faced temporary disruption. Officials provided no timeline for reopening but confirmed the scene handover to transit authorities. Preliminary findings point to external impact on the windshield causing the halt. Full details await mechanical inspection and witness statements. Muni alerts warned riders of service impacts.
