Consumer Reports’ annual surveys of over 380,000 vehicles reveal which models have the greatest risk of problems
Driving a new car home from the dealership is an exciting experience. Returning to the dealership again and again to get it fixed is not. What starts out as an inconvenience during the warranty period can turn into a financial burden after the coverage expires. This year, CR’s exclusive Annual Auto Surveys tell us that the buyers of some brand-new cars will be making more frequent visits to their dealer’s service department than other car buyers will.
The models shown here are the 10 that CR predicts to be the least reliable cars and SUVs today, based on reliability data on approximately 380,000 vehicles, as reported by their owners in the latest Auto surveys. (For more details, check out CR’s Guide to Car Reliability.)
Our surveys delve deeply into the numerous issues that can arise with a vehicle. We study 20 potential trouble areas, from nuisances—such as squeaky brakes and broken interior trim—to major concerns, including potentially expensive out-of-warranty issues with the engine, transmission, EV battery, and EV charging system.
We weigh the severity of each type of problem to create an overall reliability verdict score for each make, model, and year. To be considered for this list, we require at least two model years of data from the most recent three years in order to calculate the predicted reliability score. For this year’s survey, vehicles had to have data for at least two models, from a minimum of two of the 2023, 2024, 2025, or early 2026 model years. That reliability score is then combined with data collected from our track testing, owner satisfaction survey results, and safety data to calculate each tested vehicle’s Overall Score.
Based on that analysis, these models are the least reliable. They’re presented in rank order, counting down to the least reliable model. Each is shown with its specific reported problems.
For more details on each model’s reliability history, click through to its respective model pages.
