Gardaí have closed a regional road in North Cork following a fatal crash which occurred overnight. The R628 Conna Road, a few kilometres east of Rathcormac, was closed following a serious single-vehicle incident which claimed the life of a man in his 30s.
Emergency services and Gardaí were alerted to the collision at 10 am this morning by a member of the public, with first responders still on site this afternoon. The road remains closed as of 2:45 pm today, and local diversions have been put in place as Gardaí examine the scene.
A technical examination will be conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and Gardaí confirmed that the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene this morning by emergency responders. The body of the deceased has since been removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place.
Gardaí are urging any witnesses who were travelling on the Conna Road between 10 pm on Friday and 10 am this morning to get in touch. If they have dash-cam footage, they've been asked to make it available to Gardaí.
A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the Conna Road R628, Co. Cork, which occurred between Friday 19th December and Saturday 20th December 2025.
"Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a car in the water of the River Bride, close to the Conna Road R628, shortly before 10:00 am on Saturday. The male driver and sole occupant, (aged in his 30s), was pronounced deceased at the scene.
"The male’s body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The road remains closed pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.
"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
