Expanded network to add 12 new charging ports at key locations citywide
Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the City of Somerville Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) are announcing a major expansion of the city’s public electric vehicle (EV) charging network with the installation of six new stations that will add 12 publicly accessible charging ports.
Somerville currently has 26 ports for public electric vehicle charging at 13 locations across the city (find locations at plugshare.com). New stations will be equipped with modernized features and an updated design for faster charging and cost efficiency.
“This investment greatly expands our public electric vehicle charging network, providing more residents with easy, affordable access to EV charging. And one way to speed change is to make it easy for people, which these new stations do,” said Mayor Ballantyne. “Achieving our climate goals takes all of us, and this is another meaningful step towards a carbon net-negative future.”
Potential areas for installation were identified during a citywide evaluation conducted in 2023. Priority was placed on sites near business districts, multi-family housing, and areas with high concentrations of low-income households, known as environmental justice neighborhoods. New station locations include:
The expansion is funded through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s On-Street Charging Solutions Program, with up to $500,000 of installation services to be provided through Commonwealth Electrical Technologies.
“We are very excited to partner with the City of Somerville on the On-Street Charging Solutions Program. The on-street EV chargers planned for the six City-chosen locations will benefit Somerville residents across many different neighborhoods,” said Steve Conte, Program Director, Commonwealth Electrical Technologies.
