A total of 13 vehicles were involved in five separate collisions on the Interstate 10 Twin Span bridge Wednesday afternoon as dense fog clouded the roadway and significantly reduced visibility, New Orleans police confirmed.
New Orleans Police Department spokesperson Karen Boudrie said multiple people were taken to two different hospitals with minor injuries, though it’s not clear how many. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
The bridge was closed for nearly two hours after the first crash was reported at 12:41 p.m., Boudrie said, leading to an extensive backup amid holiday travel. The vehicles involved were cleared and the Twin Span reopened at around 2:30 p.m., according to Boudrie.
Dense fog is expected to continue blanketing roadways during late night and morning hours through the week, National Weather Service forecasters said, warning that localized “superfog” would be possible near smoldering bonfires Christmas morning. Fog is expected to be particularly problematic on roads near waterways, forecasters said.
A dense fog advisory will be in effect for the New Orleans metro until 10 a.m. Friday and again from 10 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday. Conditions are expected to improve late each morning or by around noon.
Officials urged commuters to slow down, increase space between cars and use low-beam headlights.
