JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Several new Missouri state laws are set to take effect on Jan. 1, bringing changes to wages, vehicle regulations and taxes.
Starting in the new year, the minimum wage will rise from $13.75 to $15 an hour, particularly impacting previously exempt public employers. Gov. Mike Kehoe signed the bill in July, repealing a provision that annually adjusts the minimum wage for inflation.
Vehicle owners will see changes to safety inspections and registration. A new law eliminates the previously required safety inspections for most vehicles. Drivers will also have more flexibility when registering their vehicles, with the option to choose three-year, five-year or permanent registration plans.
The extra state income tax on Missouri resident irrevocable trusts and estates will be removed next week, allowing a resident’s trust to be taxed as income sourced in Missouri. The new law does not apply to income distributed to a beneficiary.
Another law reduces Missouri’s excise tax on domestically made beer and malt liquor. The tax will be reduced to 2 cents per gallon, down from 6 cents.
