As license plate laws change to target license plate frames, drivers are desperate to personalize their cars however they can.
Following the lead of several other states, Georgia is set to give its residents myriad ways to do so starting in 2026 while avoiding fines and tickets.
Senate Bill 291 authorized the state’s Department of Revenue to issue an “America First” specialty plate, described by the bill’s sponsor Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch as “a symbol of national pride.”
During a 2024 legislative session, Gooch added that the plate “provides Georgians with an opportunity to express their national pride, and underscores the importance of emphasizing domestic concerns.”

This plate, as well as several others authorized by SB208, will allow motorists to personalize their vehicles without falling afoul of Georgia’s license plate obstruction law, which some license plate frames are in violation of.
Drivers of vehicles found to be noncompliant with the law will be found guilty of a misdemeanor offense, eligible for punishments of up to $1,000 in fines and/or 12 months in jail.
SB208’s new specialty plates honor historically or culturally significant organizations or institutions in the state.
These include the Shepard Center, the Georgia Veterans Service Foundation, Southern University Alumni, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Department of Natural Resources, Alabama State University, and black bass conservation efforts.
