BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — A crash on Capt. Jeff Bowen Bridge in Asheville shut down multiple lanes and backed up traffic on Friday afternoon.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the incident happened on I-240 West near Patton Avenue around 3:25 p.m.
According to Asheville Fire Department officials, five cars were involved in the crash, with 12 people being involved.
Two people are being sent to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Three of four lanes just before U.S. 74 Alt./Patton Avenue were closed down.
Authorities say the crash was a chain reaction.
“Probably just holiday traffic, traffic buildup, and the accordion effect of just cars slowing up in front of you, heading west into the sunset,” said the assistant fire chief, Patrick Crudup.
Kristen Waddell was driving her daughter, and their three dogs. They were on their way home to Maggie Valley after the holidays.
“This is not how I wanted to end our vacation,” Waddell said. “I mean I’m going to need new bumpers front and back, but it could have been much worse.”
She said, most importantly, they're thankful everyone is okay.
“The dogs could have been hurt, she could have been hurt, and so it could have been much worse. I’m very grateful that we can all still drive home and not spend the night in the hospital.”
According to NCDOT the multi-car crash was cleared at 5:15 p.m.
