Lake Effect snow hits Central New York
Syracuse, N.Y. — Heavy snow and high winds led to dozens of crashes and disabled vehicles across Central New York early Tuesday, snarling traffic on several major roadways.
The Onondaga County 911 Center has reported more than two dozen crashes, cars off the road and vehicles disabled.
An overturned tractor-trailer closed all lanes on the Interstate 81 northbound ramp to Exit 7, formerly Exit 25A, connecting to Interstate 90 in Salina. The crash was reported at 6:39 a.m. and cleared by 7:48 a.m.
Beginning around 4:30 a.m., multiple crashes or cars off the road or disabled were reported in the Syracuse area as heavy snow and high winds reduced visibility and made driving conditions hazardous.
All lanes were closed for about four hours on the the eastbound I-690 ramp to near Thompson Road in DeWitt due to a disabled vehicle. That incident was reported around 12:20 a.m. and reopened at about 4:30 a.m.
A crash was also reported around 4:30 a.m. on Interstate 81 northbound at Exit 16A to Interstate 481 in Syracuse, where two of three right lanes were closed. The crash was cleared by about 5:45 a.m.
The most recent incident involved a disabled vehicle, reported around 12:30 p.m. on the Interstate 481 northbound ramp from Kirkville Road East in De Witt, forcing the closure of all lanes. As of 1 p.m., the ramp remained closed.
Onondaga County issued a travel advisory because of the storm, which is expected to drop up to three feet of snow in some areas.
The lake-effect storm has high winds and blizzard-like conditions. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday.
