NEW BEDFORD — Police say a 33-year-old local man was arrested on the morning of Jan. 5 for a variety of serious offenses after officers located him in a stolen motor vehicle.
Officer Nicholas Abbate responded to the CVS on Kempton Street on a report of a stolen motor vehicle on Monday, Jan. 5, at approximately 4:30 a.m., according to a press release.
Security footage showed the suspect going behind the counter and taking car keys along with several other items. The suspect then exited the store and drove out of the parking lot in the stolen vehicle, according to the release.
About an hour and a half later, Abbate received a report of a man slumped over in a vehicle at the intersection of Nemasket and Alva streets.
Officers responded and identified the driver as the suspect. He was removed from the stolen vehicle and taken into custody. A search resulted in the seizure of a crack pipe and a small bag of cocaine, according to the release.
Officers also learned that the suspect had been involved in an unarmed robbery a few hours earlier at the Walgreens on Pleasant Street, according to the release. During this incident, the suspect approached an employee working at the counter. When the register was open, the suspect seized the opportunity to shove the employee, grab cash, and flee the scene, according to the release.
The suspect now stands charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery, larceny from a building, shoplifting by asportation, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a Class B drug, operating under the influence of drugs, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended or revoked license.
