At CES 2026, NVIDIA unveiled a new artificial intelligence system for cars – Alpamayo, which allows machines to “think” rather than just follow rules.
Previously, autopilots were good at recognizing signs and other cars, but they couldn’t take into account unpredictable situations: road workers, sun glare, or wet roads. Alpamayo analyzes video of the road, plans a route, and explains why it chooses a certain maneuver, for example: “I turned left because the truck in front seemed to be parking.”
The technology is available to all automakers: NVIDIA has opened up the model core, the AlpaSim simulator, and over 1,700 hours of video data from complex traffic situations. The new system will be tested by drivers of the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which will be the first production car with a full suite of NVIDIA AI.
The system is called MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO and combines navigation with driving assistance. This is level 2+ , meaning the driver remains behind the wheel, but the autopilot supports “cooperative steering”: the car does not turn off if the driver corrects the movement. The CLA is equipped with 30 sensors, including 10 cameras, 5 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The data is processed by the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform.
Alpamayo provides transparency in AI operations – the system explains the logic of decisions, which is important for regulators and simplifies the use of the technology for other companies. Mercedes and NVIDIA aim to accelerate the development of autonomous electric vehicles and bring them from the realm of science fiction to reality.
