NEW CANAAN — Police are urging to the public to be vigilant and take precautionary steps to help prevent car thefts, after two such thefts already have occurred in the first few days of 2026.
One car was stolen while a victim was attempting to pump gas at a Mobil station in the center of town, New Canaan Lt. Marc DeFelice said.

DeFelice said another was taken while a victim was shopping at Acme on Elm Street.
DeFelice did not say exactly what day and time each theft occurred but did say both were during the daytime.
While the majority of car thefts occur overnight in residential driveways, DeFelice said some occur when a car is left unlocked or unattended in the downtown area. He said the public should always lock their cars and never leave their car running while unattended, to prevent possible theft.
"Although we have seen a decrease from 38 stolen vehicles in 2024 to 18 in 2025 it is still occurring," DeFelice said.

DeFelice said both stolen car cases remain under investigation and the issue of car thefts "extends beyond New Canaan."
"If your vehicle is stolen call 911 immediately and attempt to get as much information to share with police," DeFelice said. "However, do not confront anyone, your safety is paramount."
