The Ford Racing 2026 season launch event is set to take place at Michigan Central Station on Thursday, January 15.
In the announcement video for the event, Ford teases the reveal of a new high-performance sports car which it also shows in the video, albeit completely covered under tarps and wraps.
However, comments made by Ford CEO Jim Farley in 2025 may hint at what the vehicle could ultimately be and the power it will put out.
Farley previously revealed that he tasked Ford engineers to design a “supercar for gravel” with a “1,000 horsepower, partially electric” powertrain propelling it while speaking with Automotive News.

If Ford Racing’s upcoming sports car is indeed the hybrid with a thousand ponies Farley envisioned, it would be more than twice as powerful as the 480 hp Mustang GT.
An equally likely option is that the new vehicle is a souped up version of the Mustang GTD, a $325,000 top-of-the-line Mustang that comes with 815 hp, 664 lb-ft, and does the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes.
However, even with clearing the 12.9 mile German track at a blistering 6:52.072, Ford is still behind the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X’s time of 6:49.275, the fastest time posted at the course by an American-made production car.
Farley’s congratulations to Chevy for the record-setting run included a response of “game on,” and an even more powerful version of the Mustang GTD would be the perfect answer to the ZR1X’s time.

The ZR1X being powered by a hybrid setup could also suggest that Farley’s 1,000 hp partially electric supercar, Ford Racing’s new sports car, and the hypothetical next step beyond the Mustang GTD are all one and the same, designed with goal of beating Chevy at their own game in mind.
With other automakers like Toyota and its Gazoo Racing division also taking a hybrid approach for their next supercars, the future for high-performance cars could be a greener one than enthusiasts expected.
