A man arrested after a two-year-old boy died in a crash in a car park in Kent has been bailed pending further inquiries, Kent Police has confirmed.
Officers said they were called to the junction of Harbour Street and Cromwell Road, Whitstable, at 20:24 BST on Saturday, after a crash involving a car and multiple pedestrians.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene and a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, said police. The BBC has learned that the man and deceased child are related and from the local area.
A man in his 20s arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been bailed to return to the police station pending further investigation.
Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield said she was "shocked and very saddened" to hear about the crash.
Ms Duffield said: "I cannot begin to imagine what the family of the little boy who lost his life must be going through.
"My thoughts are with them and all caught up in this awful tragedy."
A spokesperson for Canterbury City Council previously said: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by last night's incident.
"We have officers on site today to offer help and support."
The BBC has been told that the collision took place in Cromwell Road, which is adjacent to the car park.
Kent Police appealed for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch with them.
