COLLINS, Miss. (WDAM) – The Covington County Sheriff’s Department is beginning the new year with three new patrol vehicles.
The county has purchased three Ford Explorer Interceptors at a total cost of nearly $160,000.
But the county is also using more than $21,000 in drug seizure money to help outfit the vehicles.
“We have some drug seizure money that we have taken from drug dealers and we’re going to be able to purchase the equipment that goes in the cars and the striping and everything,” Covington County Sheriff Darrell Perkins said.
One of the vehicles is in service now. Another goes into service later this week, and the third should be ready for service next week.
“We’ve got (Global Positioning System) now in all the vehicles, which helps with the response time for the deputies to answer a call,” Perkins said.
“We have the new cages in the back which are made of plexiglass, which is more secure for the officer and the person in the back seat.”
CCSD is also finalizing a plan with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to use state inmates to help pick up trash on county roads.
Perkins said he hopes to have that plan approved in a few weeks.
