A driver police were chasing smashed into a London bus in Islington. Met Police officers, including a police helicopter, were giving chase after reports of an earlier knifepoint robbery in Whitechapel yesterday (Saturday, January 17).
It culminated in the driver colliding with a route 38 bus on City Road near Angel Tube station. The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and robbery.
Both he and the bus driver were left with minor injuries. But the fleeing car’s passenger was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon after a foot chase, MyLondon awaits a condition update.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “At around 2.15pm on Saturday, January 17, a car was in collision with a bus on City Road, Islington. At the time of the collision the car was being pursued by police following reports of a knifepoint robbery in Mile End Road, Whitechapel, earlier the same day.
“Officers attended the collision alongside the London Ambulance Service, the London Fire Brigade and the police helicopter (National Police Air Service). The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene for dangerous driving and robbery. His injuries were assessed at the scene where they were found minor.
“The passenger of the car, also a man, was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon following a foot chase. He has been taken to hospital for treatment and we await an update on his condition.
“The bus driver’s injuries were also assessed at the scene and found to be minor. No further injuries have been reported. Enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting CAD 3630/17JAN.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 2.13pm to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Islington High Street and St John Street, Islington. We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer. We treated one patient and took them to hospital as a priority.”
Following the crash TfL worked with bus operator, Arriva London, to recover the damaged bus. A TfL spokesperson said: “We are aware of a collision between a car and a route 38 bus on City Road." They added: "We will work the operator and the Met Police to investigate the incident. Thankfully, only minor injuries have been reported.”
