Traffic on northbound Interstate 5 slowed to a crawl after 21 cars were involved in a crash early Monday just south of the King-Pierce County line.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Cameron Watts said initially, the incident was called out at 5:05 a.m. as a 10-car crash caused by debris on the road, but quickly escalated to 20 vehicles, with the final count at 21.
Initially, all lanes were blocked, but all lanes had reopened by 9 a.m.

Multiple cars with flat tires were pulled over to the right shoulder until tow trucks could take them away.
Watts said it was very foggy in the area at the time, which likely contributed to the crash. Most of the collisions were cars hitting debris or minor car-to-car crashes. He said the debris was a car part, such as a muffler or bumper from a car involved in a previous collision that occurred just before 5 a.m.
Only one person was taken to the hospital.
