BRENTWOOD, New York (WABC) — Two teenage boys were injured in a shooting in Brentwood on Monday night while they were sitting inside a parked car.
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. on Madison Avenue near Hewes Street.
Suffolk County police say three males were inside a parked vehicle when a second car, also carrying at least three males, pulled up in front of them.
According to detectives, one person from the second vehicle got out and opened fire on the first car.
A 15-year-old boy was struck in the hand, and a 17-year-old was shot in the leg.
The victims' vehicle reversed and sped away from the scene. The second vehicle fled in an unknown direction.
Police say the teens drove about two miles to a street in Bay Shore, where officers were called shortly afterward.
"We initially got a 911 call from one of the parents of the individuals who were shot," said Suffolk County Police Department Commissioner Kevin Catalina. "The parents were on the phone with the person who was shot and they tracked them via their cell phones to another location."
That's where Catalina says police found the two teens shot, near Stein Drive and Marvin Road, near Brentwood High School.
Both injured teens were taken to South Shore University Hospital and are expected to survive, as their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Detectives found a gun on the ground.
"When we see this type of violence in this case, we're investigating this as a gang-motivated shooting because it's senseless and we hate to see it," Catalina said.
Police hope to find the shooters and two vehicles involved before another shooting, possibly in retaliation.
"It's tough for us to see and it's certainly a super serious thing," Catalina said.
The shooting shook residents in the quiet neighborhood, including Henry Chavez, who has lived on the block for the past 15 years. He says his wife and children were near the window when they heard the gunshots.
"They were actually in the living room, so she heard it right when it happened," Chavez said. "So, my 7-year-old said, 'oh it's fireworks,' and from what she described, she looked at my older two and was like that definitely was not fireworks."
Suffolk police say they have gathered some surveillance video, and are still trying to speak with the hurt teens to get more info on the suspects to hopefully lead to an arrest.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Suffolk County Police Third Squad at 6318548352 or Crime Stoppers at 800220TIPS.
