SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) — The Summerville Police Department is bringing out a new safety feature to stop vehicles whenever necessary.
Police said the barricades will be used at bigger events in the area to stop vehicles from traveling into large crowds. The town council voted for the department to receive the systems.
Chief Chris Hirsch said the department wanted to use the barricades after the deadly New Year’s Day incident when a vehicle drove into a crowd of pedestrians.
“It’s to protect everybody, all of the citizens we have at our events,” Hirsch said. “We hold a lot of events in Summerville and the purpose is to keep from what happened in New Orleans about a year and a half ago. Multiple people lost their lives and we don’t want that in Summerville.”
Police confirmed they will use the barricade at the Flowertown Festival this spring.
