Rhode Island's newest outdoor rink isn't settling for just ice skating, it's already planning to add a fun new feature families will love.
Warwick opened its outdoor skating rink at City Hall Plaza last December during the city's annual Apponaug Winter Festival. The plan has always been to offer fun activities for the whole family at the rink year round — now one could be coming sooner than expected.
Barely two months after opening, Mayor Frank Picozzi has announced plans to add bumper cars as soon as possible.
Bumper cars on ice have been hugely popular for other Rhode Island ice rinks, like the one in downtown Providence. Now, Picozzi says he wants to add that kind of excitement to Warwick as well.
In a recent Facebook post, Picozzi pointed out the bumper cars' ability to generate revenue around the country adding that the manager at the Providence rink called bumper cars the most used feature at their rink.
Perhaps Warwick is not seeing the interest they thought they would in their new outdoor ice rink, considering they are already searching for ways to boost revenue.
Still, adding bumper cars does sound like a fun feature more families are likely to use. Sitting and sliding around the ice is a lot easier than skating for those who have never tried the sport before.
Picozzi's post also let taxpayers know that the funds for these new bumper cars would come entirely from tourism money that is earmarked for promoting the city.
The bumper car purchase still needs City Council approval before it moves forward, but Warwick could have an exciting new feature to their outdoor ice rink before this winter is over.
